Our Mission

Our program’s mission is to train leaders in medicine whether they plan to work in academics, community practice, biomedical research, healthcare policy and administration, or other areas. In pursuit of this goal, we expect all residents to engage in significant scholarly activity*. Through this activity, residents will:

  • Learn to critically analyze and apply literature.
  • Gain appreciation for the process of discovery.
  • Improve scientific communication skills.
  • Clarify and advance their own career development.
*Also fulfills ACGME Common Program Requirement for scholarship.

Research Opportunities

There are three primary opportunities for residents interested in research.

Physician-Scientist Track

Residents with significant prior research experience who plan careers in basic or clinical research may apply directly to our Research Track. Participants in this track follow the ABIM Research Pathway and proceed to combined clinical and research subspecialty fellowship after two years of residency.

Physician-Scientist Learning Pathway

The Physician-Scientist Learning Pathway includes dedicated time for research projects with expert mentorship, a core curriculum, a works-in-progress meeting, and a capstone senior elective that helps pathway members integrate their roles as clinicians and scientists to answer questions that matter. Through pathway activities, participants will build relationships with subspecialty fellowship programs.
