The University of Washington Internal Medicine Residency Program is home to the GHITKU—the Greatest Housestaff in the Known Universe!
Our purpose is simple: we prepare medicine residents to care for individuals and the community. Through outstanding clinical training, dedicated faculty mentorship, and a culture of continuous learning, we help residents develop into exceptional physicians who are ready to meet the needs of patients and communities.
At UW, education and patient care are inseparable. Residents train in a diverse, academically rich environment alongside faculty who are passionate about teaching and committed to their growth. Across our clinical sites, residents gain broad experience caring for patients from a wide range of backgrounds and with a full spectrum of medical needs.
Our mission is to graduate residents who are fully prepared to thrive and serve the community in the next chapter of their careers. Whether pursuing primary care, hospital medicine, subspecialty training, research, academic medicine, or community practice, our graduates leave with a strong foundation in clinical excellence, professionalism, and lifelong learning.

About us
History
Beginning in 1957, shortly after the UW School of Medicine and Department of Medicine were founded, the residency program began with 24 positions and residents completing all of their training at one site, Harborview Medical Center. We’ve grown quite a bit since then! We have 185 residents, including 13 chief residents, and rotations at over 20 medical centers, affiliates, and clinics.
